New CVD-coated inserts for process-safe turning in steel

October 22, 2024

Unique combination of Kyocera's own carbide substrate, coated with newly developed and extremely durable coating, results in impressively long tool life, increased productivity and ultimately a strengthened bottom line.

CA115P/CA125P – new standards in steel turning application

The colours are black and gold, and they characterise our latest indexable inserts solutions for turning steel. The newly developed turning inserts combine Kyocera's unique CVD coating technology with a carbide substrate that together give you several exciting benefits in the industry.

The inserts are available in both negative and positive types, and with the large selection of chipbreakers, you can expect consistent and stable chip control in many different scenarios. The insert series, which has an impressive wear and fracture resistance, ensures machining with low cutting forces, as well as efficient and maximum productivity. The predictable and long tool life means, among other things, that the inserts can be advantageously included in an automated production line, after which manual supervision of the process can be minimized, and at the same time machine capacity can be freed up.

Due to the large application area and the extraordinarily long tool life, this means that you can reduce the cost of stocked inserts, which ultimately helps to reduce your unit costs, and thus increase your bottom line.

CVD coating technology

Kyocera's new CVD coating is an innovative coating technology that consists of several different thin layers. CVD, which is an abbreviation for "Chemical Vapor Deposition", is a high-tech chemical process in which the coating material is deposited under vacuum on the core of the plate. The process, which takes place at higher temperatures than is used for other types of coatings, results in several thin layers, which together result in a relatively thick coating. One of these layers is a unique Alumina film developed by Kyocera, and this special composition allows the insert to maintain its sharpness while achieving extreme wear and tear resistance.
In combination with the core's unique carbide substrate, you achieve a tool life that is up to 4 times longer compared to conventional turning inserts for steel. The characteristics of the inserts allow you to choose whether you want to prioritize extraordinarily long tool life or whether you want to increase your productivity with the help of higher feed rates (feed).

PP, PQ, PG, PH and PMG chipbreaker

The series is available with a large selection of chipbreakers for a wide range of applications and machining conditions. The PP, PQ, PG, PH and PMG chipbreakers are particularly good chipbreakers especially for steel application, embrace both positive and negative type inserts which are intended for everything from roughing to finishing. Each chipbreaker type has its specific characteristics, and is, for example, finishing-oriented, stability-oriented or is designed with particularly strong cutting edges. Apart of the 5 chipbreakers in this series you will also find a newly developed Wiper geometry (WP), which is extremely suitable for high productivity.

The newly designed PMG chipbreaker, which is a novelty in the series, is designed for a wide range of applications, and is particularly suitable for medium to roughing applications. PMG, like the other types in the series, has superb wear resistance and a long tool life, works with low cutting forces and performs excellently with very good chip control.
